Proxmox virtualisation

A handful of physical servers rarely run at full power, and each of them has to be powered, cooled and replaced. We consolidate them on Proxmox: less hardware, higher availability and an end to the rising licence fees of closed solutions.

  • ISO/IEC 27001
  • 3000+ workstations
  • Since 2017

Virtualisation lets you run many independent servers on one powerful machine. We design environments on Proxmox, an open platform proven in production, and compare them honestly with VMware and Hyper-V, so that the choice follows your needs, not habit.

What a virtualisation project covers

From an audit of the current servers to a finished, highly available environment.

  • Server consolidation

We combine several underused physical machines into one virtual environment. Less hardware means fewer failures and lower electricity bills.

  • High availability

We configure a cluster in which the failure of one node does not stop services. Virtual machines come back up automatically on healthy hardware.

  • Lower licence costs

Proxmox does not burden the budget with per-core fees or the yearly price rises typical of closed solutions.

  • Built-in backup and migrations

We set up machine backups and moving them between nodes without downtime, which simplifies servicing and updates.

  • Platform selection

If you already have VMware or Hyper-V, we help decide whether migration is worthwhile, or whether it is better to stay with the current solution.

Why licence cost has stopped being a minor expense

For years a licence for a virtualisation platform was a one off, bearable cost. That has changed. Changes to licensing models at large vendors, the move to annual fees counted per processor core and price rises after acquisitions have meant that many companies saw, overnight, a bill several times higher than before. For an environment that simply works, that is an expense hard to justify.

Proxmox is built on proven, open foundations: the Linux kernel, KVM and containers. You do not pay for every core or for features that are charged extra in commercial packages, such as high availability or replication. Optional vendor support is available, but it is not a condition of operation. The result is the same, and often higher, availability at a predictable cost. We do not push migration for its own sake: if VMware or Hyper-V fits your environment better, we will say so plainly.

How the deployment goes

We run the project so that the move to virtualisation does not stop the company.

  • 2-4 weekstypical project completion time
  • HA clusterresilience to a node failure
  • less hardwareconsolidation of physical servers
  • no licence feeper core in the Proxmox option
  1. Audit of the current environment. We check how the servers are used and which services run on them. This shows how much hardware can realistically be consolidated.
  2. Architecture design. We match the number of nodes, the storage array and the cluster configuration to the load and availability requirements, with headroom for growth.
  3. Deployment and migration. We build the environment and move the machines in stages, in agreed windows so as to limit the impact on work.
  4. Handover and documentation. We deliver documentation of the environment and training, so you know how to manage it day to day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Proxmox stable enough for production?

Yes. It is built on the Linux kernel and KVM technology, which power a huge part of the world cloud infrastructure. These are mature, proven foundations, not an experimental solution.

How does Proxmox differ from VMware and Hyper-V?

Mainly in the licensing model and openness. Proxmox does not charge per core and has high availability as standard. VMware and Hyper-V are sometimes the better choice for specific integrations, which is why we always precede platform selection with an analysis.

Does migration from VMware involve long downtime?

It does not have to. We move the machines in stages, in maintenance windows agreed with you. For most services we limit downtime to a brief switchover.

What about backup of virtual machines?

Proxmox has a built-in backup mechanism, which we configure as part of the project. For full protection we combine it with a 3-2-1 backup model and, if needed, a disaster recovery plan.
